  I just read the Josh review of the Family Self Defense Center... and after attending classes (most Saturdays) for the past 5 years I will have to formally disagree with the reviewers (Josh) assessment of the instructor and the classes he provides. I have visited a number of schools since I was in my 20s (now 54) and although most of the institutions I have visited offered some sound practical self-defense… not all did. Some were more sport orientated while others were more traditional in style (nothing wrong with either) but my focus is strictly self-defense. 5 years ago I research the martial arts classes available in the Hickory area… and while I found there were many to choose from I was only looking for was a practical self-defense approach that fit my body type, mobility, and catered to my personal strengths and personality… There is no such thing as one size fits all instructions… everyone has different abilities, strengths and learning curves… that is why I choose The Family Self Defense Center: Mr. Nelson… has the ability to present his curriculum with fluidity focusing on what is applicable according to the uniqueness of each individual regardless of age, size, body mechanics, or health limitations. When you enter the class you warmly welcomed with a hand shake and a smile. The focus will be on a practical mind/body approach to Self- Defense. I underlined self-defense because that is what is taught… what you will not focus on here is squaring off to box or wrestle or kick box and while those are fantastic sports in which I am a fan of… the curriculum focus here is counter, catch, carry an eclectic ballistic set of self-defense actions that are appropriate for a variety of assaults. That is what we prepare for… life altering assaults… I will admit I am not an expert fighter (far from it) but I can defend my-self against a wide variety of possible assaults and that is all I am concerned with. Finally the School does not promote violence… but how to avoid it first then defend yours and your family’s wellbeing second. So I do not agree with the reviewer… Anyone interested in visiting and would like a student’s first hand opinion I am there most every Saturday from 10am – 1pm just ask for Jess
